Mrs H. H. Dawson, Nelson, is the guest of Mrs E. J. Heffer, Lansdowne. Mr and Mrs A. H. Daniell, Albert Street, Masterton, have returned from a visit to Paraparaumu Beach. The Rev J. H. Combs, of Pahiatua, is making satisfactory progress after an operation he underwent at the Pahiatua Hospital. Mr. A. E. Mabin, afer 55 years’ service with Levin & Co., Ltd., has retired from his position as manager of the firm, though he will retain his seat on the board of directors. Mr. L. J. Bayfield, who for several years was manager of the Chateau Tongariro, has taken over the management of the Government hotel at Te Anau while Mr. F. .Swift is on military service. The sad news has been officially received by Mr and Mrs C. M. Burgess, of. Cornwall Street, Masterton, that their youngest son, Private Crosby Moren (“Mick”) Burgess, was killed in action on March 22. The King was represented by Colonel the Earl Fortescue (Lord-in-Wait-ing) at the memqrial service for Viscount Galway at Saint Mark’s Church, North Audley Street, London, a special Press Association correspondent reports. The New Zealand High Commissioner, Mr Jordan, represented the i New Zealand Government and Briga-l dier R. S. Park represented the New Zealand military forces and the N.Z.E.F. Others present included Mr W. L. James (New Zealand Society), Sir William Peel (Victoria League), Countess Jellicoe and Sir Harry Ldke. The death occurred at Hastings yesterday of Mr. H. Nelson Fowler at the age of 74 years. Mr Fowler was born in India and was educated in England. He came to New Zealand when he was 25 years of age. He was the son of the late Mr J. T. Fowler, who was a well known Masterton resident. Mr Nelson Fowler was engaged for some time.in farming near Carterton and later moved to Hawke’s Bay. He retired from farming some 30 years ago, and went to reside in Hastings, where he took a prominent part in church , affairs. He is survived by his widow and by a daughter, Mrs F. Ewart, Auck- ( land.
