CARTERTON
PATRIOTIC APPEAL ■ SUM RAISED BELOW QUOTA. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr. L. H. Smart presided over a meeting of the Carterton Patriotic Committee held in the Borough Council Chambers last night. There were also present: Messrs. G. S. George, J. Steel, C. A. Chennells, A. T. Murray, A. H. Calilster, J. M. Jury, J. A. B. Lawrence, Mesdames P. L. Beere, J. Standen and Miss C. Berrill. A letter of thanks is to be forwarded to all those who had assisted in the canvass and in any other way helped the committee. It was decided That Mr. J. A. B. Lawrence ascertain if a room could be established for entertaining visiting servicemen. It was resolved to ask the Soldiers’ Farewell Committee to arrange to hold a dance weekly, the proceeds to be devoted to patriotic funds. It was stated that when the remaining promises of money come to hand Carterton’s quota would still be below what was required. However, gatherings are to be held for the purpose of increasing the contributions. Personal Items. < Mr and Mrs C. Thomas, of Palmerston North, are visiting Kokotau and are the guests of Mrs Thomas’s parents. Mrs Wilson, who had been the guest of Mrs W. Hayden, Holloway Street, Carterton, left for Dannevirke today. From Dannevirke she will - leave for Auckland, going thence to England. Church Service. A Church of England service will be held at Ponatahi on Sunday. Presentation to Soldier. In the report of the presentation to Pte. G. Bain, the parcel of woollen, garments handed to him were given by the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union and not the Women’s Insti-* tute. REGENT THEATRE TWO FEATURES. There will be shown tonight two features—“ Cash and Carry,” an excellent comedy, with Ann Southern and George Murphy in the leading roles, and “Playmates,” a brilliant musical comedy with catchy music and songs, the chief characters being portrayed by Patsy Kelly, May Robson and Lupe Velez.
