ESCAPE REPORTED

NEW ZEALAND OFFICERS IN ITALY MAY BE BRIGADIERS HARGEST AND MILES. SAID TO HAVE REACHED SWITZERLAND. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, March 31. Two New Zealanders who were prisoners in Italy have escaped to Switzerland, says Reuter’s Lugano correspondent. It is believed in London that they may be Brigadiers Hargest and Miles. Both were in the same camp near Florence. They were captured in Libya in December, 1941, within a few days of each other. The Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, stated last night that he had no official intimation of the escape of two New Zealand officers from an Italian prison camp, but inquiries were being made immediately. (Three New Zealand brigadiers, Miles, Hargest and Clifton, were prisoners of war in Italy.)
