BOWLING LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIPS. (“Times-Age” Special.) In the final of the championship pairs of the Carterton Ladies’ Bowling Club, Mrs Martin and Miss Lamb beat Mesdames Colson and Thompson. In a championship singles game, Mrs Martin beat Mrs Thompson, 17/16. At the 21st head the scores were even and in the extra head played the winning shot had to be measured. DALEFIELD GATHERING SOLDIER ENTERTAINED. The Dalefield Hall was filled on Tuesday evening when Pte. Gifford Bain was the guest of honour. Visitors were present from Wellington, Masterton and the Carterton district. For the dancing, music was supplied by Mrs Rogers. Mr W. Press was an efficient M.C. Mr L. J. Fairbrother, on behalf of the residents of the district, presented the guest of the evening with a toilet outfit in a leather case. Mrs Hughes, on behalf of the Mata-rawa-Dalefield Women’s Institute, handed to Pte. Bain a parcel of woollen garments. Mr W. Davis, on behalf of the Parkvale residents, presented Pte. Bain with a substantial cheque as a mark of the esteem in which he was held by the residents of Parkvale. Pte. G. Bain suitably returned thanks. Personal Items. Mrs E. L. Wakelin, of Wakelin Street, Carterton, who has spent a holiday at Taumaranui, returned home yesterday. Writing to his parents in Carterton, N.C.O. Arthur R. Steffert, who is a prisoner of war in Germany, and who saw service in Greece and Crete, says that he is fit and well. He stated that two Carterton soldiers, Stan Parker and W. Thompson, had arrived at the camp in December. The death occurred at the residence of his daughter, Mrs E. A*. King, Kano Street, Karori, yesterday, of Mr George Butler, at the age of 90 years. He was born at Redford, Nottinghamshire, England, and came to New Zealand over 60 years ago in the sailing ship “Rakia,” and had resided in the Carterton district most of that time. He took up farming at Parkvale. He later was proprietor of a small goods business in Masterton. He was held in high esteem for his personal qualities. He was a keen member of the Methodist Church His wife predeceased him over 5 ' years ago. There are two sons and four daughters left. They are Messrs George, Carterton, and Fenton, Whakatane; Mesdames F. Parker, West Taratahi; Tottie, Ashburton; E. A. King, Karori;' and H. Andrews, Parkvale. The funeral will leave the Methodist Church, Carterton, for the Clareville Cemetery, on Saturday, after a service commencing at 1.30 p.m.
Patriotic Dance. In the Belvedere schoolroom tomorrow evening a dance will be held to raise funds in connection with the patriotic appeal. New Books. The following new books have been added to the shelves of the Carterton Public Library: —“The Way pf a Pilot,” Barry Sutton; “We Rendezvous at Ten,” Blake; “One Enemy Only—the Invader,” Paul Simon; “Zero Hours,” Gun Buster; “The Dawn is Ours,” Charles Terrot; “The Strong City,” Taylor Caldwell; “Army Without Banners,” Ann Stafford; “Soldiers From the Wars Returning,” Jerrard Tickell; “Meadowsweet,” Oliver Sandys; “Wtr Marriage,” Denise Robins; “The Prodigal Daughter,” Muriel Hine. Vital Statistics. In March there were 4 births, 3 marriages and no deaths registered in Featherston. The figures for the corresponding month last year were 4, 5 and I. During the past quarter, 17 births, 6 marriages and 12 deaths were recorded. Swimming Ciub Dance. There was a very good attendance at the dance held in the State Theatre last evening to wind-up the Swimming Club’s successful season. The trophies won were presented to the winners by Mr L. J. Fairbrother, who was assisted by Mr F. H. Taplin. The music for the' dancing was supplied by Mr Tom Udy’s Orchestra. Mr J. Burt was M.C. A Monte Carlo waltz’ was won by Miss A. Fairbrother and Sgt. A. Brant. A guessing competition was won by Mr Tom Udy. Mr Fairbrother thanked the members for having made the season such a successful one. Prizes were presented as follows: —Points prize for junior boys, R. Goodin; points prize for intermediate boys, L. Spooner; ladies’ championship points prize and junior girls’ points prize, Miss A. Fairbrother; junior dive (Bond Cup), P. Bond; King Rose Bowl, L. Paterson; Sorensen Cup and Parton Cup, Noel Desmond; beginners’ points prize, girls, N. Mellish 1, V. Regan 2; boys, J. C. Churchouse 1, J. Sullivan and R. Mellish (tie) 2; in-ter-club cup, T. McPhee and L. King (tie); relay championship, Masterton Club swimmers; 50 yards district championship, Clay (Masterton); 100 yards backstroke championship, J. Barnes (Masterton). Supper was provided. REGENT~THEATRE “CASH AND CARRY.” Tonight’s double feature programme is headed by “Cash and Carry,” starring Ann Sothern and George Murphy, and “Playmates,” a musical comedy with Kay Kyser and Patsy Kelly in the chief roles.
