Earthquake in Masterton.
An earthquake was felt in Masterton at 10.45 o’clock last night. Garden Party. The Masterton Free Kindergarten Association will hold a garden party at “Kingswell,” Renall Street, on Saturday, commencing at 2 p.m. There will be well-filled stalls, sideshows and competitions. The Marine Band will be in attendance and will provide a programme of popular music. Patriotic Shop Day. Stall holders at the united Wairarapa women’s “White Elephant” shop day held in Masterton today in aid of the Provincial Patriotic Fund Appeal reported brisk business. There was a keen demand for the many goods and articles displayed. The flower, cake, produce and jumbles, stalls were particularly busy. Women for War Work. About 200 women in the 21 to 30 years age group have already been directed by the National Service Department to Wellington to engage in essential industries for war purposes, and they include a number from the South Island. A total of 345 is required to complete the first group, for whom accommodation is being provided. Meat Production. The official figures of killings for the present season at the Dominion’s freezing works from October 1 to March 13, as issued by the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board, show that lamb killings now total 7,176,975 carcases compared with 7,597,678 carcases to March 14 last season. Wether mutton killings are 280,604 carcases, and ewe mutton killings 1,095,117 carcases, compared with 510,380 and 1,185,986 carcases respectively last season. Frozen beef production has reached 165,409 quarters compared with 171,138 quarters last season. Porker killings total 40,024 carcases, a decrease of 57,817, whilst baconers total 77,972 carcases, a decrease of 111,924.
