STATUS OF WOMEN

another, step proposed IN INDIA. RIGHTS OF INHERITANCE. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, 9.45 a.m.) NEW DELHI, March 28. British officials and modernised Hindus have joined forces in an effort, to gain another step in the emancipation of Hindu women. A new Bill, designed to give women equal inheritance rights, is now before the Legislature and is being hotly contested by orthodox Hindus, who are using every argument, from a claim that women cannot manage property to the assertion that the Bill will break up the centuries-old family system of government. Supporters of the Bill are confident that it will be put before the drafting committee. Half a century ago British Liberals and Hindus virtually eradicated suttee and more recently the same force legislated against child marriages, which today are the exception rather than the rule.
