Mrs E. F. Lyford and Mr and Mrs George Hyland, “Lowlands,” Featherston, are spending a holiday in Napier. A message from Beirut (Syria) reports the arrival there of the New Zealand Minister of Defence (Mr F. Jones).
The death at the age of 61 of Viscount Galway, who was Governor-Gen-eral of New Zealand from 1935 to 1941, is reported in a message from London. Mr Archibald McDougall, formerly architect for the Wellington Education Board, died at his residence, Roseneath, on Friday last, at the age of 79 years. The death has occurred in the United States of the well-known Russian pianist and composer, S. V. Rachmaninoff. He would have been 70 years old this week.
Mr Thomas Rowell, a member of an old Wellington family, died at the Otaki Hospital on Saturday, aged 74 years. He was educated at the old Mount Cook Boys’ School, Taranaki Street. Later in life he established the “Vienna” confectionery business in Courtenay Place, which he conducted with success for a quarter of a century. The funeral of the late Mrs J. W. Lewis took place in Masterton this morning. Requiem Mass was celebrated at St. Patrick’s Church by the Rev. Father N. Moore and the Rev. Dr. Gilhooly conducted, the service at the cemetery. Wreaths were sent, among others, from the Mastert'on Women’s Branch of the Labour Party, the Wairarapa Trades Council, arid fellow employees of the Waingawa Freezing Works. Messrs P. J. O’Donnell, F. Lewis, L. Robinson and D. B. Curry acted as pall-bearers.
