NO SLACKENING
IN RUSSIAN CENTRAL FRONT OFFENSIVE Siow Penetration of Formidable Fortifications INNER SMOLENSK DEFENCES NOT YET REACHED FIGHTING IN SOUTH LESS VIOLENT LONDON, March 25. The main news from Russians of fresh Soviet advances on the central front, where the Bed Army is pressing’ forward with its twin drive-towards Smolensk. This offensive has been in full swing’ for three weeks and shows no signs of slackening’. Mr Paul Winterton points out that the Germans are fully aware of the value of Smolensk and are fighting- grimly for every strongpoint and defence line. The Russians are battling’ their way through great obstacles. Sometimes it takes many hours to break down the resistance of one of these strongpoints. As the Russians get nearer to Smolensk the defences are likely to become even tougher. The inner fortification system has not yet been approached, On the southern front the recent violent fighting has died down, although sharp clashes are taking place on a small scale.
