CHIMNEY REPAIRS
GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY OF 30 PER CENT ANNOUNCEMENT BY MAYOR. REFUND ON ACCOUNTS ALREADY PAID. The Government has agreed to pay a subsidy of 30 per cent on all earthquake chimney repair accounts rendered by the Masterton Borough, Masterton County, Mauriceville County and Castlepoint County Councils. In making known this decision this morning, the Mayor of Masterton, Mr T. Jordan, said that action had been agreed to, following on representations he had made to the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, and to the Secretary of the Treasury, Mr B. L. Ashwin, and supported by figures supplied by the Town Clerk and the Masterton County Clerk. In addition, said Mr Jordan, the Government had agreed to pay the whole of the amount involved in the case of pensioners who were unable to meet the cost of repairs. Mr Jordan .pointed out that these arrangements did not apply to chimney repairs carried out by private contract. He expressed the hope that the owners concerned would promptly meet their- obligations and make a speedy settlement, so that the borough finances could be placed on a proper footing at the earliest possible moment. People who had already paid their accounts should apply to the borough for a refund of 30 per cent. The Treasury had promised to forward a cheque covering the 30 per cent subsidy immediately. Mr Jordan said he wished to thank Mr Ashwin and the officers of his Department for their courtesy and attention to the request made to them for financial assistance.
