NORTH-EAST OF SMOLENSK RUSSIANS ONLY 30 MILES FROM CITY. HEAVY ENEMY LOSSES EAST OF BRYANSK. LONDON, March 24. ' Soviet columns are fighting near Duchovshchima, only 30 miles northeast of Smolensk. This morning’s Soviet communique refers to fighting north of Duchovshchima, and says that the Russians made more progress. Another Soviet column driving west along the main railway is also doing well. The latest estimate of the German losses in the three-day battle northeast of Bryansk is close on 7000 men, 140 tanks and hundreds of guns. F .
