MADE BY RUSSIANS IN ATTACKS DURING TWO DAYS. FRINGE OF OUTER DEFENCES REACHED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.45 a.m.) LONDON, March 14. The Russian threat to Smolensk is growing . The Red Army, pushing on in a double thrust from the north-east, is now only 32 miles from the stronghold at the nearest point. Following on their penetration of the German defence line north of Dukhovschino, the Russians are in a position to attack Smolensk or to cut it off from Yartsevo, which is also a great German base. The Russians have captured eighty townships in the offensive started two days ago north of Dukhovshchino, which is a valuable road centre from which one road leads direct to Smolensk and another to Yartsevo. "The Times” Stockholm correspond-
ent emphasises that further progress in this area must necessarily be slow, as the fringes of the elaborate outer Smolensk defences have now been reached.
