The following are the results in connection with the Carterton Ladies Bowling Club’s championships:— A grade: Championship singles, 2nd round: Mrs Martin beat Mrs Swan. 3rd round: Mrs Martin beat Mrs Colson, Mrs Thompsoin beat Miss Armstrong. 4th round: Mrs Thompson beat Mrs Martin. B grade, 2nd round: Mrs Swan beat Mrs Adams; Mrs Martin beat Miss Lamb. Championship pairs: Mrs Martin and Miss Lamb beat Mrs Colson and Mrs Thompson; Mrs Martin and Miss Lamb beat Mrs Adams and Miss Armstrong. Club pairs: Miss Armstrong and Mrs Colson beat Mrs Swan and Mrs Thompson. E.P.S. MEETING SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE TRIALS. The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, presided over a meeting of the combined E.P.S. units. It was resolved that a report be forwarded to the local Police Office in connection with the non-attendance at meetings and trials of a member of the Warden Unit.
The matter of organisation and arrangements for carrying out safety precautions in the event of fire or state of emergency at the local picture theatre was left in the hands of the controller of the Warden Unit.
The matter of arranging for a siren or alarm signal to be controlled on a car for the outlying portion of the borough was left to the controller of transport and the chairman. It was resolved that the telephone subscriber whose attitude in refusing to permit the use of the party line on request by the Post Office during the recent emergency trial be written to pointing out the necessity for the cooperation and assistance of all residents of the district during a state of emergency.
It was decided that a letter be forwarded to the manager of a store in Carterton calling his attention to the fact that his premises were closed previous to the sounding of the “all clear” signal, which in a state of emergency might cause serious inconvenience and delay. It was resolved that the supply unit be authorised to transfer Mr W. C. M. Sorensen from the supply unit to H.Q. Coy., Home Guard, and that the supply unit appoint a deputy controller to fill the position. The following suggestions for future trials were brought forward: That the controller of the works unit be notified if a telephone is out of order; the warden in charge of evacuation accommodation be asked when reporting cases of evacuation to report the reason; that any arrangements for an increase in personnel was a matter for internal arrangement; that authorised printed message forms be cyclotyped for the electrical unit, and messages should be prefaced “Practise” with definite information as to locality and nature of damage; that broken wires or power lines be reported to the Power Board or headquarters, whichever is nearest. DAMAGED POST OFFICE t - — i PREMISES VACATED. So badly shaken was the Carterton Post and Telegraph Office in the earthquake in June and August that the authorities have found it necessary to vacate the premises and to demolish the present structure, rebuilding a new Post Office for Carterton. Arrangements have been made to house the stall and conduct postal business in the Municipal Bandroom. Business in connection with the telephone system will be conducted in a temporary building to be erected on the section adjacent to the present office. Personal. Mr Cudby, building overseer to the P. and T. Department, Wellington, is in Carterton supervising the alterations to the bandroom in Holloway Streeet, where it is intended to house the postal staff, and also the rebuilding of a temporary telephone exchange. Mrs Kenneth Hopkins, of Hastings, is at present spending a holiday with her mother, Mrs M. E. Copeland, Victoria Street, Carterton. REGENT THEATRE “MY LIFE IS YOURS.” The thrilling mystery drama, “My Life is Yours,” will be shown finally tonight. The chief characters are portrayed by Lew Ayres, Lionel Barrymore and Laraine Day.
