/ CARTERTON COUNCIL PROPOSED NEW STREET. 97 PER CENT OF RATES COLLECTED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, presided over the monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council. There were also present: Councillors E. McKenzie, H. Mortensen, L. M. Clark, C. J. DeLacey, Howard E. Jackson and Miss O. W. Wolters. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors W. A. Hart, C. E. Stevens and W. R. Harry. The treasurer reported a cr. balance in the District Fund Account of £339 15s sd, and in the Gasworks Account of £361 16s lid. It was reported that the rates outstanding at present totalled £176 Is 6d, while the rates collected amounted to 97 per cent of the total. * The Masterton County Council wrote enclosing a list of allocations to various boroughs and county councils and stating that Carterton’s share was £B4 Is sd. Two applications were received for a position on the borough outside staff. Mr J. McKenzie was appointed. Mr H. B. Keenan, Power Board engineer, submitted, a report in regard to a pumping plant to augment the borough water supply, for which he was thanked. The question of a sump as outlined in the report was referred to the works committee for consideration. The Wairarapa Hospital Board wrote stating that it was proposed to raise a further loan for needed additions and alterations. After discussion it was resolved to raise an objection to the proposed loan and draw the board’s attention to the fact that the hospital rate had been trebled during recent years. It was considered that the hospital levy was a national liability and should not be a burden on the ratepayers. It was resolved to close the municipal baths on Sunday next. It was decided that outstanding rates be placed in the hands of the borough solicitor to take action. It was resolved to inform Mr W. Wadham that his complaint in regard to a creek on his property was a matter for adjustment between himself
and his neighbours; failing a settlement the council would take action. The Mayor reported that property owners between Belvedere Street and Broadway had given sufficient land for a new side street. The Works Committee had gone into the matter and had thought the proposition worth while. After discussion it was decided that matters in connection with the proposed new street be left to the Works Committee with power to act. The Works Committee reported that the site of the proposed chlorination plant had been inspected and that the erection of the building was being proceeded with.
