FEATHERSTON

RED CROSS SOCIETY SUB-CENTRE ACTIVITIES. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Featherston sub-centre of the Red Cross Society has a financial membership of 156. During the past year 26 students attended classes, 4 of whom were Home Guardsmen. Twenty-two V.A’s.' sat for their examination. In hygiene and sanitation 13 candidates presented themselves and 11 passed; in home nursing all the eleven candidates passed and in first aid 8 out of nine passed. In the transport section all three candidates passed in the mechanics examination, and 6 out of 7 in the A.R.P. section. The transport had a busy year, making 184 trips, covering a total distance of 5101 miles. Eight needy families were assisted at Christmas time. Red Cross members met every Wednesday throughout the year to sew and otherwise work for the sick and wounded, a large number of articles being provided including 151 first aid kits for the Home Guard. The activities throughout the year were very successful. EUCHRE PARTY GATHERING AT RED CROSS ROOMS. There was a good attendance at the euchre party held in the Red Cross Society’s rooms yesterday afternoon. The winner at cards was Mrs Elder. Miss Eva Card and Mrs Cross wop the competitions held. Donations were received from Mesdames O’Neale and Elliot. Personal Items. Mesdames Brady and A. Donald who had been visiting Featherston, returned to Lower Hutt today. Miss Ridler, who had been visiting Featherston, has returned to Wellington. COSY THEATRE “BALL OF FIRE.” Tomorrow night there will be presented the excellent comedy-drama, “Ball of Fire,” in which Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwick have the leading roles. Packed with novel and delightful situations, along with brilliant dialogue and the work of an ideal cast, the new offering ranks among the best fun films ever produced. Besides being a real treat, it affords its stars two of the finest characterisations they have had to date.
