GERMAN HOPES
OF SPRING AND SUMMER OFFENSIVE AGAINST THE CAUCASUS. PRESENT EFFORT EXPENSIVE. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, March 21. It is tolerably certain, from Berlin indications, that the Germans hope to relaunch a spring and summer campaign against the Caucasus, partly to acquire oil and partly because they consider few other important objectives are attainable, says the Stockholm .correspondent of “The Times.” The Germans consequently are making a most determined bid for the Donetz bridgehead. Russian strategy requires retention of the left bank of the Donetz to enable a drive from Kursk, Orel or elsewhere when the ground dries. The Germans’ present effort is so expensive that they may find the accumulation of weight comparable to last
year and forestalling the Russians a tough, even too tough, a task. Nevertheless, the Germans hold an advantage by a bridehead in the Caucasus which they did. not possess last year. The Germans have not even the most meagre prospects of a successful major offensive on the northern half of the front, but are probably obliged to fight hard defensively as the Russians have indicated that they do not intend to remain idle as they did during the summer of last year.
