■ WAIRARAPA SOUTH MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL. STRAYING STOCK ON ROADS. (.“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council was held at Carterton yesterday, Councillor F. Court presiding. The chairman extended a hearty welcome to the new councillor, Mr Crawford Cameron. The Clerk was authorised to write to Mi- and Mrs H. J. McKenzie expressing the council’s sympathy with them in their recent bereavement. Councillors stood in silence for a few moments as a mark of respect. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £11,752 15s 6d. The County Clerk reported that 98J per cent of county rates had been collected- to date. Complaints were received in connection with stock straying on county roads. An instance was given where the ranger* had taken charge of straying animals and the owner had refused to pay the impounding fees and had abused the ranger. The council took a serious view of the matter and the clerk was instructed to write to the person concerned, pointing out that if the impounding fees were not paid, a prosecution would follow. Councillors stated that their employees must be protected. Arising out of the overseer’s report it was decided that the clerk write to the person concerned pointing out that it was an offence to allow pigs to wallow in the water races and that the practice must stop, otherwise legal action would be taken. The Health Officer reported two cases of scarlet fever in the county. Mr P. A. Cole, Town Clerk to the Carterton Borough Council, wrote in regard to the water races in the borough. The county decided that the races be attended to until March 31, after which the borough would be asked to control the same in the borough. Messrs W. G. Parker, E. A. Parker, B. W. Bird, A. B. Card, W. R. Daysh and A. C. Hayes petitioned the county for a water race through their properties which they would be prepared to maintain. It was resolved that the County Overseer (Mr Wallace) and the water race overseer (Mi’ H. J. McKenzie) inspect the property of the petitioners and report to the next meeting of the council. Mr R. J. Tretheway was appointed dog tax collector for the Maungaraki Riding and the appointment of another collector for the remainder of the county is to be made. The tax will be the same as last year. The Masterton County Council wrote in connection with the construction of the Taueru Bridge and asking that strong representation be made by the Wairarapa South County Council to the Main Highway Board that the work be proceeded with. It was decided that the Highway Board be communicated with on the matter. It was decided to support the proposal not to hold a County Conference this year. The overseer was instructed to go on with the erection with a swing bridge over the Little Kawhata stream. Councillor A. E, Reid said that sooner or later the county must consider a scheme for the erection of its own building. He understood that the old fire brigade station site was for sale, and he thought it would be very suitable. It was eventually decided to obtain particulars of the site.
