The Red Army has launched an attack on the Murmansk front, in the far north. Pushing forward across the Arctic’s frozen wastes, the Russians have reached a point about 7| miles from Petsamo, the port of northern Finland, and are shelling the town. The British United Press says it is believed that the aim of the new offensive in this area in order to give more protection to the Russian convoys to Murmansk. Russian patrols are reported to be advancing occasionally as far as the Arctic highway, which is the Germans’ only supply line on the Arctic front. A German army corps of only two or three divisions is protecting Petsamo. It is called the Edelweiss Corps, and is composed of men from the mountains of Austria and southern Germany.
