“JOHN BULL” CALLING
SCHOOLS GIVE A LEAD. PATRIOTIC APPEAL. According to a statement issued by the Masterton Patriotic Committee — “John Bull” was very gratified at two incidents yesterday. Some little time ago the Otautete Native School at Homewood, under the guidance of their teachers, became members of the Junior Red Cross movement. They were anxious to give some help to the Red Cross Society, so for some months they have been busy with their garden. Yesterday they sold their produce and from the proceeds they sent a donation to the Patriotic Committee. “John Bull” thanks his Maori friends. By the same mail came a letter from St. Bride's Convent. There the pupils had given up their prizes for the year and at their own request this prize money, amounting to £5, was donated to the Patriotic Committee. “John Bull” hopes that the boards of governors and the headmasters of the various schools in the district will follow the lead these two schools have given. It should not be difficult for the pupils themselves in the senior schools to give some donation from their own earnings without asking from their parents.
