GREYTOWN
BOROUGH COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING. ("Times-Age” Special.) ‘ The monthly meeting of the Greytown Borough Council was held last night. There were present the Mayor, Mr A. W. Horton, Councillors G. F. Eagar, H. J. Farley, F. Wood, H. C. Trotman, H. McKenna and W. A. Tate. Apologies for absence were received from' Councillors A. Stuart and E. Balfour. The Cemetery Committee reported that considerable damage has been done to glass wreaths by vandals and the matter had been reported to the police. The funds of the cemetery account were very low and a grant would have to be made from the District Fund account. Councillor Tate asked the reason for the funds being low in this account. He suggested that if the cemetery was not paying for itself that the committee be recommended to review the fees if necessary. The building committee recommended that the property taken over from the Hebley Estate be put in a state of repair; that an architect be employed to draw plans and specifications and that, if a satisfactory tender was received, the work be proceeded with. The committee also recommended that the brick portion of the gasworks be advertised for sale and removal. The Town Clerk reported: “The current rates collected to date amount to £3,976 16s 5d or 96.22 per cent of the rates struck. The rates collected in the previous year were 94.77 per cent. Arrears of rates collected amount to £346 5s 7d against £4BO Os lid in the previous year. The rate collection is very satisfactory. In connection with the arrears, it will be noted that the collection is less than last year. We must expect this as the rates outstanding at the end of each year are less owing to the high percentage of current rates being collected each year.” Councillor Tate moved that the Town Clerk be complimented on the rates collected. This motion was seconded by Councillor Trotman and carried. Constable Gregor reported on the damage recently done at the baths and cemetery. From inquiries made, he stated, it was evident that the damage had been done by boys between the age of ten and fifteen years. Further inquiries were being made. The report was received. The New Dominion Canneries wrote askiong for a remission of half rates owing to their premises -having been vacant for over six months. The request was granted. On the motion of the Mayor a vote of thanks was passed to the Town Lands Trust for a grant of £6O to the library and one of £25 to the Memorial Park. BOWLING CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS. Owing to counter attractions several club games were not played at the weekend. In the club champion fours
