INTERHOUSE GIRLS

USE OF COLLEGE GROUNDS. REFERENCES AT BOARD MEETING Objection to the presence of Interhouse girls on the grounds at Wairarapa College at dusk was expressed by Mrs J. L. Hair at last night’s meeting of the Wairarapa College Board of Governors. After discussion it was decided to draw the Interhouse Association’s attention to the matter. Mrs Hair asked at what time the Interhouse girls who practised on the grounds were required to leave and for that matter if any person were allowed on the school grounds at any hour. Mr J. D. O’Connor: “Who gave the Interhouse girls permission to use the grounds?” i The Acting-Principal, Mr F. J. Gair, said he had given the girls permission, to drill first thing in the morning and in the evenings. The chairman, Mr W. R. Nicol, said the girls should be encouraged in drill, etc. Mrs Hair said that it was necessary to know when the girls left. No matter what the time of night now, voices could be heard from the shrubberies. Mr Nicol said it was a matter of Government policy that school grounds should be made use of as public rights-of-way but it was not intended that the right should be abused. The school grounds were public property to a certain degree.. Mr A. Owen Jones said that what • Mrs Hair really wanted was for the Interhouse people to be asked that their girls get away from the grounds before dusk. As soon as it became dusk they could not drill. Mr Nicol: “TJiat is only a reasonable request.” Mr Jones pointed out that the night students were told not to linger in the grounds. Board members agreed that the drill, etc., carried out by the girls was worth while and should be encouraged, but that the association should have its attention drawn to the matter of the time at which the girls left the grounds.
