JAPANESE ACTION

IN OCCUPIED CHINA.

ATTEMPT TO SAFEGUARD COMMUNICATIONS. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) CHUNGKING, March 12. Chinese authorities have expressed an opinion that the Japanese drive in the Hupeh Province is designed to safeguard Japanese communications on the Yangtse River and does not imperil Chungking. The Japanese are particularly anxious to hold a hundred mile stretch of the river beyond Yochow, which is the supply line to Ichang, the most distant point pf Japanese penetration. Current enemy operations might hinder the flow of Chinese reinforcements in the event of a new Japanese drive against Changsha.
