Flying Officer R. J. Smith, of Masterton, has been promoted to the rank of Flight-Lieutenant in the Royal New Zealand Air Force. The death occurred at Pahiatua on Saturday of Mrs Jemima Annie Udy, wife of Mr Charles Udy, of Hukanui, at the age of 72 years. Advice has been received by Mrs P. E. Colban, Miriam Street, Masterton, that her son, L.A.C. “Ted” Colban, has arrived safely at his destination overseas. The death has occurred of Mr William Ronaldson King, Ngaio, aged 52, a former private secretary to several Ministers of the Crown, who retired recently from the Public Service because of ill-health. He served with the N.Z.E.F. in the Great War, and before his appointment to the secretarial corps was in the Department of Agriculture. The death occurred suddenly yesterday at his home at Ngamoko, Norsewood, of Mr Matthew Alexander McLaren. He was a son of the late Mr and Mrs R. McLaren, of Pirinoa. He is survived by a wife and two children, two sisters (Mrs C. Cumpety, of Whangarei, and Mrs T. Harvey, Greytown), and a step-brother (Mi’ Stan Hall, of Pirinoa). Mr Frank Evans, a former Masterton stock auctioneer, has been elected a life member of the Poverty Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Association, in recognition of his eminent services to the association over a long period of years. Mr Evans, during the time he resided in Masterton, was a very popular and efficient stock auctioneer, and was associated with various movements having for their object the advancement of Masterton. The funeral of the late Mr I. J. Hardley, the victim of an accident at Waingawa on Thursday evening, took place in Masterton on Saturday afternoon. The service at the Chapel and that at the cemetery were conducted by the Rev. H. S. Kings. The interment took place in the soldiers’ plot. Wreaths were sent by Messrs Jones and Joyce Ltd., staff of Messrs Jones and Joyce, Ltd., and employees of the Railway Coppersmiths’ Shop, Auckland, Taesides others from private sympathisers. The pall-bearers were Messrs C. Groombridge, J. Gray, L. Rutherford and L. Price.
