DAY OF PRAYER
OBSERVANCE BY WOMEN IN MASTERTON. WORLD-WIDE CELEBRATION. • The observance of the women's worldwide day of prayer in Masterton yesterday was marked by a gathering of a large number of women associated with all local churches. Reference was made as to how the day originated. As far back as 1887 some women in the United States of America came togethei’ • to pray for missions and it was from this small beginning that the day of prayer had started. It was now observed in 55 countries. The women in New Zealand were in the unique position of commencing the chain of prayers, as it was on New Zealand’s shores that each new day began. At yesterday’s gathering in Masterton women of all denominations lifted up their hearts and voices in prayer, praise, address and Scripture readings. The programme which was followed this year was prepared by two American women, one of whom was a Negress. A freewill offering was taken up for imperilled missions, which means those that formerly were supported from the churches in enemy or occupied countries. As these missions at present are cut off from their source of supply, their need is very real. The amount realised was £5.
