SHOTS FIRED AT MARCEL DEAT ACTIVITIES OF FRENCH ' GUERILLAS. — NUMBER OF GERMANS KILLED OR WOUNDED. LONDON, March 11. A number of men, using automatic pistols, last night attacked Marcel Deat at his country estate, says the Paris radio. Deat and his wife were not hit, but a member of his police escort was wounded. The telephone lines to the estate were cut. Deat was wounded by a bullet in August, 1941, and a bomb was thrown at him in March, 1942, but failed to explode. He is the founder and leader of the Fascist “People’s Party” and the editor of the Paris newspaper, “I’Oeuvre.” Twenty-nine German soldiers were seriously wounded and several were probably killed when guerillas in daylight attacked a German column in a working-class district in Lyons, according to information which has reached the Fighting French headquarters in London. The Germans, who were young replacements for seasoned troops who had been sent elsewhere, were thrown into a panic when the guerillas showered hand- grenades on them from an alley. The Germans used their ma-chine-guns wildly, and killed a boy among some bystanders. The whole area has been cordoned off, and the Gestapo is searching from house to house. Guerillas blew up a munitions train near Valence, killing the German train crew. A troop train was brought to a standstill near Paris and attacked with grenades. Twenty-three Germans were killed and many wounded. Twenty-four Germans are reported to have been killed in restaurants in Lille. When two troop trains collided near Brest 50 German officers and men were killed. The Morocco radio says that in Alsace two young men have been executed for disobeying German labour orders, and several others have been deported. Others have been sent to prison without any reason being given. 1 A German transport ship was so severely damaged when a bomb was thrown aboard it at Trondheim, Norway, that it had to be beached. The Germans have arrested six hostages.
