FEATHERSTON

RIVER BOARD MEETING of members. (“Times-Age” Special.) At a meeting of the South Wairarapa River Board, held in the Borough Council Chambers, there were present: Messrs R. A. Donald (chairman), R. W. Matthews, A. Linton, T. Hume and W. Martin, also the engineer, Mr H. F. Toogood. It was reported that there was a credit balance at the Bank of £538 10s 4d. The district valuers, Messrs D. Duncan and P. Fowler, were present to supply questions to any answers asked in connection with their report oh the scheme for flood control of the Ruamahanga. River and Wairarapa Lake. After considerable discussion it was resolved: “That the Board submit to the Minister of Public Works and the ratepayers the scheme of flood control as prepared by the engineer, and point out that while the engineering has received the general approval of the Public Works Department and Board, the economic value depends on the special betterment which will accrue to low-lying land, now only partly used, and which, if made flood-proof, would make available at least 7,800 acres for closer settlement; that the work is of a magnitude which calls for the scheme being undertaken nationally.” It was decided to call for tenders for the repairs to the Tuhitarata stop bank caused by the big earthquake. Personal Items; Miss Rae Buck has left for Wellington to join the Women’s War Auxiliary Corps. Mrs E. M. Johnson is reported to be making satisfactory progress after her recent operation in the Greytown Hospital. Swimming Club’s Dance. The Featherston Swimming Club will hold a dance tonight in the Town Hall. A good orchestra has been engaged, and the floor is in splendid order. Service Club Card Party. There was a good attendance at the euchre party held in the Service Club. Mrs H. Williams and Mrs P. Habib tied for first place, and Mrs Lawson and Mrs Cross for second place. A competition was won by Mr Dick Holland.
