Mr Mace Newman, of Masterton, is visiting Auckland. Miss Valmai Davies, Bannister Street, Masterton, has left on a visit to Auckland. His Honour Mr Justice Blair has been appointed president of the Prisons Board. Sir Francis .Frazer has been appointed Industrial Efficiency Appeal Authority. Mrs R. Spackman Senr., has returned to Masterton after having spent a holiday in Wanganui and North Auckland. The King has approved the retention of the title “honourable” by Sir Hubert Ostler, who recently retired from the Supreme Court bench. Word has been received by Mrs Gordon Lawton, of Palmerston North, and formerly of Masterton, that her husband, who is in the Air Force, has safely reached his overseas destination. The death took place at Manakau on Sunday of Mrs Alice Elizabeth Tatum, widow of the late Major Charles Thomas Tatum, who died a few months ago. Mrs Tatum was 90 years of age and was a well-known figure in the Horowhenua district, having resided at Manakau for very many years. There were no children of the marriage. As a result of the recent successful action between certain of his Majesty’s New Zealand ships and a Japanese submarine, leading to the destruction of the submarine, already published, the United States Commander of the South Pacific Area has made in the name .of the President of the United States, a number of awards, including a Letter of Recommendation to Leading Seaman Trevor Gray, son of Mr and Mrs F. B. Gray, Bannister Street, Masterton. Leading Seaman Gray is a former pupil of the Wairarapa College. He was on H.M.S. Achilles at the battle of River Plate, and has been in action on several occasions since. He visited the College when the Achilles returned to New Zealand after the River Plate action.
