EARTHQUAKE DAMAGE

MUNICIPAL ASSOCIATION RESOLUTIONS COST OF CHIMNEY REPAIRS. NATIONAL PROVISION URGED FOR DISASTERS. Resolutions relating to earthquake damage passed unanimously by the executive of the Municipal Association at a meeting held in Wellington yesterday, presided over by the president, Mr T. Jordan, Mayor of Masterton, were: —’ That the Government pay out of national funds up to £5O in each case of the cost of repairing the damage done to first-line chimneys by the earthquakes of June and August last. That at the end of the war any monies remaining in the War Damage Insurance Fund be earmarked to meet damage due to any national disasters in the Dominion and if necessary, a portion of the existing war damage insurance levy be retained. The attention of the Prime Minister is drawn to remits already sent to the Government from time to time, requesting that such an insurance fund be established, following upon a Bill introduced in the House of Representatives in 1934 by Mr Barnard which provided for a levy of Is per centum on insurance. The resolutions are to be forwarded to the Prime Minister immediately. Those present at the meeting were the Mayors of Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, Palmerston North, Lower Hutt, Feilding, Masterton, Blenheim, Sumner and the representatives of the town boards of Papatoetoe and Otautau (Invercargill).
