MAORI WAR EFFORT

MEETING AT TE ORE ORE WAIRARAPA TRIBAL EXECUTIVE. DISTRICT ACTIVITIES REVIEWED. At a meeting of the Wairarapa Tribal Executive Committee held at Te Ore Ore, delegates from all the Tribal Committees in the Wairarapa were present. Colonel Hemphill, liaison officer of the Maori War Effort organisation, was accompanied by the private secretary to Mr P. K. Paikea, who was unable to be present, Mr Robert Taylor, Messrs L. W. Parore (Auckland Executive) and B. Roberts and J. Robertson, M’s.P. A welcome was extended to the visitors by the chairman, Mr Potangaroa and Lieutenant Manihera. Mr Robertson briefly replied on behalf of the official party. Colonel Hemphill addressed the gathering at length and congratulated the Wairarapa people on the wonderful progress they had made. He referred in particular to the assistance rendered to the organisation by Messrs Roberts and Robertson. He explained many details which were not clear to the various committees, and reviewed general activities in the Wairarapa. At the conclusion of his address he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Mr Taylor apologised for the absence of his chief and his explanation of the various matters put to him by the delegates helped materially to place many aspects of the activities of the organisation in a clearer light. Mrs K. Te Tau, who was secretary of the organisation since its inception, tendered her resignation owing to her having joined up with a war organisation in Wellington. The resignation was accepted with regret. Mr G. T. Nepia, Homewood, was unanimously elected to the vacancy.. Mr S. T. Potangaroa was granted leave of absence owing to sickness in his family. Mr Peter Paku was appointed Other matters affecting the war effort were discussed and dealt with. The next meeting of the executive will be held at Papawai.
