TOWN WATER SUPPLY
CAUSE OF DISCOLOURATION. SLIP IN WAINGAWA GORGE. Referring to the discolouration of the town water supply which pas been noticeable lately, the Borough Engineer, Mr C. R. Mabson, said this morning that' the position was due to a large slip in the Waingawa River gorge. The slip, which was probably due to earthquakes loosening the surrounding area, had brought down the bush and left exposed a form of limeston’e clay. Whenever a fresh came down the river, and of late there had been many, said Mr Mabson, the river cut into the slip and the water became noticeably discoloured. The filters could not deal with the fine greyish sediment which got into the supply. Mr Mabson said the position should remedy itself in the future, provided more slips did not come down in the gorge. He pointed out that lately the two largest floods in the Waingawa for many years had washed the flood waters ” over the town supply intakes and into the reservoir, further complicating the position.
