MAGISTRATE’S COURT

FORTNIGHTLY SITTING SALE OF LIQUOR AFTER HOURS. PROCEEDINGS AGAINST LICENSEE AND OTHERS. The fortnightly sitting of the Masterton Magistrate’s Court was held today, Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., being on the Bench. Arising out of a police raid on the Blairlogie Hotel on January 23, T. H. Peet, hotel licensee, was fined £lO and 10s costs on a charge of having opened his hotel premises for the sale of liquor after hours. Senior Sergeant C. Murphy said the licensee’s hotel had a good reputation and the licensee was a first offender. Evidence regarding the raid was given by Constable Beck, Tinui. John Murison, barman, arising- out of the above charge, was fined £lO and 10s costs on a charge of having sold liquor after hours. Charged with having consumed liquor on licensed premises after hours, Peter W. Balfour, E. D. Carman, James Carter, and Frederick D. A. Meredith were each fined £2 and 12s costs. Carter was ordered to pay 16s 3d witnesses’ expenses. Arising out of the above charges Andrew Jackson was fined £2 and £1 8s 3d costs on a charge of having aided and abetted in the commission of an offence. OTHER CASES. E. Liddington and G. Ball were fined 10s and 10s costs and 5s and 10s costs respectively on charges of having permitted stock to wander in the borough. An information laid by Mi’ J. W. Henderson, borough poundkeeper, against Cho Nam Wong (Mr J. MacFarlane Laing) for permitting horses to wander on Akura Road was dismissed. On the information of Mr J. McGregor, Borough Traffic Inspector, the following were prosecuted on charges of operating vehicles without warrants of fitness: J. A. McLean, £1 and 10s costs; M. Summers, 10s and 12s costs; R. J. Bayliss, 5s and 12s costs; A. Clark, 10s and 10s costs; C. Clark, 10s and 12s costs; M. A. Hodder, £1 and 10s costs; J. H. Garnett, £1 and 10s costs; F. W. McDonald, £1 and 12s costs; E. J. Wilson, 10s and 10s costs; C. B. Seymour, £1 and 10s costs; F. C. O’Connor, convicted and ordered to pay court costs, 10s.

E. J. Loader and J. A. McLean were each fined 10s and 10s costs on charges of having driven motor vehicles without a driver’s licence.
