RANGITUMAU TRAGEDY

FUNERAL OF VICTIM YESTERDAY. The funeral of the late Donald Shenton French, who lost his life as the result of an accident at Rangitumau last Saturday, took place in Masterton yesterday afternoon, there being a large and representative attendance of mourners. The service at St. Matthew’s Church and that at the graveside were conducted by the Rev. W. Tye, assisted by the Rev. H. Taepa. Mr Tye said the lad was a fine type of youth, possessing the three essentials of cheerfulness, kindliness and courage. Boys from Wairarapa College lined both sides of Church Street from the church as the funeral procession passed along. Many beautiful wreaths were in evidence. They included those from the following:—Boys of College Hostel, fellow pupils of College, Form Ag. IV., Wairarapa College Board of Governors, teachers and office staff of College, combined Dental Clinic Committee, Manga pakeha Billiard Club, Mangapakeha School Committee, teachers and children of Mangapakeha School, Tinui Home Guard, Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, Tinui branch; management and staff of F.C.D.C., Ltd., Messrs Fly and Savage. The pall-bearers were Colin McKay, Colin Macdonald, John Tyver, Roy Sherbourne, James Johnstone and George Gair, all pupils of Wairarapa College.
