Mr R. Knowles Smith has been elected chairman of the Pahiatua Patriotic Appeal Committee and Miss H. Davidson secretary. Miss Bette Holms, of the legal firm of Messrs McKenzie and Marsack, Masterton, will relinquish her position this week to join the Women’s Auxiliary of the Air Force. The engagement is announced of Brenda, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs H. Martel, Gordon Street, Masterton, to William John, third son of Mr and Mrs S. Clarke, Devon Street, Masterton. The death has occurred in Dannevirke of Mrs Catherine MacKenzie at the age of 86 years. She had been a resident of the Southern Hawke’s Bay district for the past 43 years. Born in Scotland, Mrs MacKenzie settled with her husband in the Weber district in 1901, later coming to the Dannevirke district.
