SERVICES APPRECIATED MR S. THOMAS HONOURED. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a large attendance at the complimentary social gathering and dance tendered to Mr Stan Thomas in the Memorial Hall. Mr E. C. Holmes, on behalf of the residents of the district, presented Mr Thomas with a gift and a cheque. Mr Holmes spoke in eulogistic terms of the services rendered to the community by the guest of the evening, not only in his capacity as 'a Government official, but in all phases of local activities: Mr Carter briefly spoke on behalf of the Maori people. Mr Thomas, who was loudly applauded, suitably returned thanks. Songs and poi dances helped to enliven the proceedings. Mrs Papanui, Gladstone, won the ladies’ prize at euchre. Messrs Duggan and Burling were successful in the men’s section. Mr Mclntosh was M.C. and Mr Matenga supplied the music, the extras being played by Miss Te Whaiti and Messrs Richards and Carter. ( The ladies of the district supplied supper. Personal Items. _ Mr Gordon McKenzie, who has been a resident of the district for the past six months, has returned, to Wellington. It is Mr McKenzie’s intention to pursue his studies at the University. . Mrs Bragg has returned from a visit to Hawke’s Bay. Mrs Papanui has returned to Gladstone. Mr and Mrs Chaytoo have returned to their home at Matire, King Country. Mrs S. Thomas and her children have left for Te Awamutu, where they will stay for a short period. Mr and Mrs Andrew Simson have returned to their home at Feilding. . Mr and Mrs J. Cowan were recent visitors to this district. Miss L. Hutchison has returned from a visit to Masterton. Mr J. Hunter, Martinborough, has received advice that his son, Tom, who had been training in Canada as wireless operator, has been missing since January. . _ . Miss Ina Te Whaiti, who was visiting relatives in Wanganui, has returned home. Miss Scrimegour has been the guest of Mrs Lovegrove. Miss Joan Lovegrove has commenced her duties as postmistress at the local post office. The exploits of Pilot Officer Martin Hume in various sweeps over France and Germany are particularly pleasing to residents of the district. Possessed of a quiet disposition, he was, when resident here, an athlete of some promise and was indeed good in all branches of sport he took‘up.
