GREYTOWN

CROQUET WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION. (“Times-Age” Special.) A meeting of the Wairarapa Croquet Association was held in the Park Pavilion yesterday afternoon. Mrs Wakely (president) presided over a good at-/ tendance of members. The • Martinborough, Featherston, Haunui, Masterton, Lansdowne and Greytown clubs were represented. The overseas visitors extra levy was voted out for all time. It was decided that Mrs Bassett’s honorarium be the same as usual. It was decided that the champion of champion matches be cancelled for this season. The date of the annual meeting was fixed for May. A most enjoyable half-hour, tournament was held by the Wairarapa Croquet Association on the Greytown croquet lawns yesterday. Visitors from Masterton, Lansdowne, Featherston, Haunui, Martinborough and the Greytown croquet clubs were present, a total of 40 players. Mrs H. G. Carter, president, welcomed the guests and hoped that they would enjoy the tournament. Visitors expressed pleasure on being invited to play in such beautiful surroundings. Play started at 10 a.m. and was continued until 5 p.m. The place winners were: —Miss Nix, Haunui, 1; Mrs Snowsill, Masterton, 2; Mrs Saunders, Featherston, 3. Thanks were accorded to Mrs A. G. Gregor (Greytown) for having arranged the games. The sum of £4 2s was handed io Mrs Bassett (Association secretary), to be devoted to the association funds. At the finish of play, when presenting the prizes, Mrs Carter expressed pleasure at the good results achieved. Mrs Wakely returned thanks on behalf of the visiting players. — Patriotic Committee. ' Mr A. W. Horton presided over a meeting of the Greytown Citizens’ and District Patriotic Committee which was held last night. The chairman spoke on the work which had been carried out during the past year and stressed the necessity of a combined effort to raise the 1943 patriotic fund quota. Mrs J. F. Thompson moved and Mrs Shedden seconded a resolution that a committee of men be formed, and that they carry out the direct appeal campaign. The motion was carried. The secretary was authorised to send a circular letter to residents throughout the district. It was decided that in future all complimentary social gatherings to local members of the armed forces be held in the Town Hall. The dance committee was asked, to consider the question of commencing dances for servicemen in the district. The parcel committee was instructed to make arrangements immediately for the next lot of parcels. It was decided that the secretary forward letters of sympathy to Mesdames Sugrue and Rewi. The Red Cross and Patriotic Committees reported that they now had supplies of wool in khaki, navy and air force blue for knitters'. Application for the same could be made to either Mrs Bunny or Mrs Shedden. Mr S. Slater was appointed to the soldiers’ committee. Patriotic Effort. At a special meeting of the Papawai Tribal Committee it was decided to make a special effort to raise funds for patriotic purposes at the Crown Theatre on March 5. The committee has been very busy in connection with patriotic activities, and is sparing no effort to help in all war efforts. TOWN HALL TWO ATTRACTIONS. ' Two special features will be shown tomorrow night—“ Adventures of Martin Eden” and “The Royal Mounted Patrol.” Both are excellent dramas which should hold the interest of patrons throughout?
