BEGGING BY CHILDREN
SERVICEMEN PESTERED. « A POLICE WARNING. Numerous instances have been reported to the police in Masterton of children stopping visiting United Servicemen in the streets and pestering them for money and cigarettes. School children have been warned by the headmasters in Masterton that they must not do this and the police state that action will be taken against any, person caught begging from servicemen. Some children are stated to have begged large sums of money. Instances have been reported to the police of unscrupulous persons fleecing the visitors over change. A schedule of taxi charges for the district has been forwarded to the officer commanding the Marines for circulation in routine orders. In one instance, it is reported, servicemen were sold home brew beer at a charge of 7s 6d per bottle.
