GANDHI’S FAST
NO CHANGE IN ATTITUDE OF GOVERNMENT ' STATEMENT OF POSITION. POLICY TO BE MAINTAINED. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10 a.m.) RUGBY, February 22. / The grave condition to which Gandhihas brought himself, after twelve days’ fasting, is not considered by the Government of India as necessitating any change in its attitude. The Government stated, when the fast began, that it deplored the use of the weapon of fasting to achieve political ends and saw no justification for it. The Government had no intention of allowing the fast to deflect its policy nor would it be responsible for its consequences to Gandhi’s health. They offered to release him for the duration of the fast but Gandhi expressed his readiness to abandon it only if released. The Delhi Government points out that no new factor has emerged and the responsibility in connection with the fast rests solely on Gandhi, on whom the decision to bring it to an end must rest, LATEST BULLETIN HEART REPORTED WEAKER.
