MINISTERIAL STIPENDS
A GENEROUS GIFT. BY AUCKLAND FAMILY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) .. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Through the generosity of members of a well-known Auckland family, the interest on a gift of £30,000 would be available to augment ministerial stipends, the Methodist Conference in Christchurch was informed yesterday by the ex-president, the Rev. William Walker. In making the announcement, Mr Walker said that he had found that many laymen of the Church were much concerned at the fact that a number of ministers were receiving less than the minimum stipend. Last year the conference was delighted to have received from Mrs J. H. Blackwell, Auckland, a gift of property to the value of £5OOO, the interest to be used for augmenting the stipends. Mr Walker then advised the conference that Mrs Blackwell, in association with her brothers, Messrs George, Frank, and Percy Winstone, had desired further to augment that gift through real estate transfers to the amount of £25,000, making £30,000 in all. The conference, on the motion of the Rev. M. A. Rugby Pratt, carried a vote of thanks to the donors.
