AXIS SHIPS SUNK

SUCCESSES BY BRITISH SUBMARINES IN MEDITERRANEAN AREA. LARGE TANKER PROBABLY DESTROYED. . LONDON, February 22. Still more blows have been struck by British submarines against Axis shipping in the Mediterranean. The Admiralty states that British submarines have destroyed two merchant ships, probably destroyed a large tanker and inflicted damage on three more enemy vessels. The large tanker was speeding westward off Sicily, with a destroyer escort when the British submarine sighted her. The tanker was hit by two torpedoes for certain. Two of the smaller ships were sighted near the shore and despite the fire of coastal batteries the submarine remained on the surface long enough to pump many shells into both vessels.
