BOY SCOUTS CARD TOURNEY. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the weekly card tourney held by the Boy Scout Committee there was a large attendance. The prizes were won as follows:—Ladies: Mrs Pauling 1, Mrs E. Thompson 2. Men: Mrs O’Halloran 1, Mrs J. Lenihan 2. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE COMPETITION WINNERS. X At the monthly meeting of the Carterton Women’s Institute the Garden Circle was responsible for the arrangements. Miss Wolters, convenor of the Garden- Circle, presided over a good attendance. Miss Wolters was nominated as president of the Wairarapa Federation and Mesdamcs Peacock and Joblin asmembers of the executive committee. A beautiful display of floral art was the work of the members of the Garden Circle. The competitions resulted as follows:— Collection of jams (3): Mrs T. G. Reading 1, Mrs A. T. Hawke 2, Mrs B. Trapp 3. Collection of jellies (3): Mrs A. T. Hawke I. Bottle of preserved fruit: Miss Wolters 1, Mrs E. Hawker 2, Mrs A. T. Hawke 3. Collection of vegetables: Mrs A. T. Hawke 1, Mrs L. Goodin 2, Mrs E. Hawker 3. Best bloom: Mrs E. Hawker 1, Mrs L. Goodin 2, Mrs Skelly 3. It was decided to forward a contribution of goods to the Combined Service Women’s Club in Wellington after the March meeting. Mr B. Roberts, M.P., gave an interesting and instructive address on the growing Of vegetables and the uses of a compost heap, for which he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks, and was presented with a dainty buttonhole. Mrs S. J. Munn judged the competitions and was presented with a packet of bulbs together with the grateful thanks of the members. Patriotic Committee. Mr D. L. Taverner presided over a meet- 1 ing of the Carterton District Patriotic Committee. ' Mr Smart moved and Mr Fairbrother seconded, that the patriotic campaign for 1943 be carried out on a system of subscriptions by individuals on a pre-determined schedule of the amount of income. The motioh was carried. Messrs Taverner, L. H. Smart, W. Martin, G. Brown, J. L. Loftus and C. A. Chennells were appointed an executive committee. Canvassers for the borough are to be arranged by the executive. Canvassers for the county districts were approved as follows:—Gladstone and East Coast, Messrs J. K. Strang and E. B. Booth: Longbush", to be arranged; Carrington and West Taratahi, Mr W. Wilson; Belvedere, Mr A. H. Callister; Dalefield and Matarawa, Mr L. J. Fairbrother; Waihakeke and Parkvale, Mr C. Jensen; East Taratahi, Mr C. Reynolds; Kokotau, Ponatahi and Ahiaruhe.Mr W. M. Jury. The districts not represented at the meeting are to be advised that their requirements of petrol for canvassing must be stated as early as possible. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs H. R. Renall, Kokatau, have received advice that their son, Lux, has been promoted, and now holds the rank of Lieutenant Mr and Mrs W. Foster have received a letter from their son who is a prisoner of war in Italy, stating that he is in good health. Donation to Fire Brigade. Mr E. D. Clough, of Chester Road, Clareville, has donated £2 to the Carterton Volunteer Fire Brigade in recognition of their work in checking a grass fire recently when- his homestead was in danger.
