LENINGRAD’S TRIALS
HEAVY ARTILLERY SHELLING CITY RUSSIAN ATTACKS IN LAKE ILMEN AREA. UNPRECEDENTED quantity OF WAR MATERIAL. (By Telegraph— Puess Association— Copyright) LONDON, February 18. Though the blockade was lifted a month ago, Leningrad’s trials have not ended, says the Moscow correspondent of "The Times. ’ German heavy artillery mounted on armoured trains is hurling lOin. shrapnel shells against the city from a range of 20 miles, and the Luftwaffe, whose crack pilots have been retained in the north, makes frequent attempts to pierce Leningrad’s immensely powerful anti-aircraft barrage. A Zurich message says that reports from Berlin emphasise that the Russian offensive in the Lake Ilmen region is being 'carried out with an unprecedented amount of war material, especially tanks and artillery. One source states that most of the tanks are brand new, especially those of the T 34 type and 52-tonners. This is further evidence of the Soviet’s gigantic reserves.
