WOMEN’S DIVISION
MEETING OF WAIRARAPA COUNCIL PROHIBITION AS A WAR MEASURE. SUPPORT URGED FOR W.C.T.U. RESOLUTION.i A meeting of the Wairarapa Council of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Rest Room, Masterton. today. There was a representative attendance of members. There was some discussion regarding what was described as the small amount of the sugar allowance in the jam and bottling period. It was stated that a woman in the South Island had been granted 27001b5. of sugar for the making of wine. The following resolution was carried unanimously: “That this meeting of the Wairarapa Executive urge the Advisory Board to communicate with the W.C.T.U. at its March convention, expressing sympathy with the resolution before its meeting regarding prohibition as a war emergency measure and for six months afterwafds.” ' A discussion arose as to the distribution of the remaining funds subscribed from various quarters for earthquake relief. It was decided that the president be authorised to receive written applications from the presidents of branches and administer the remaining funds accordingly. In a report on housekeeping activities, Mrs J. Andrews referred to the wonderful work and spirit of some of the housekeepers as well as to the hardship and overwork occasioned to country mothers through war conditions on the farms, and the lack of adequate help in rearing young families. There was also, she said, a drift of domestic help to munition and other factories. A letter was received from the .National Co-ordinating Committee asking for suggestions for the prevention of the present waste of second-gi ade fruit and vegetables quite suitable for sale for home consumption, and which marketing restrictions made unsaleable . A letter ’was received by Mrs Pike from a lad in Scotland expressing the appreciation of the “boys of the British Navy” for parcels of comforts forwarded by the Wairarapa Executive. Personal thanks were also sent for a “swell” pullover. The garments sent out during the year included 59 pullovers, 28 scarves, 16 balaclavas, 9 sea-boot stockings, 1 pair gloves, 29 caps, 10 pairs socks, and 1 body belt. The thanks of the division were expressed to Mesdames Pike and McLean for their work in the distribution of wool to workers.
