LEAP FOR THE KILL
URGED BY AMERICAN WRITER. OPPORTUNITY OF SMASHING GROGGY ENEMY. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK. Febrluary 10. Writing in the “New York Times,” Mr Hanson Baldwin says: “It is a sound principle in war, as in the boxing ring, to leap for the kill when the opponent is groggy. Therefore considerable Allied risks are fully justified by Germany’s present situation. The events of the past two months reached their climax in the capture of Kursk and have presented the Allies with an opportunity to shorten the war. “Germany is now engaged'in a gigantic mobilisation throughout Europe, but the new divisions will not be ready before the summer. If Britain and America utilize the opportunity to disperse and strain Hitler’s manpower by establishing an new European front, Germany might be dealt the fatal blow. “Speedy Allied operations are also indicated in the Pacific, where our position at Guadalcanal is very strong after the Japanese abandonment of the island, but it must be recognised that we have been forced to utilise much of our strength in the Pacific on Guadalcanal, while" our position in other sectors of the great arc round the Western Pacific is not equally strong. The next Allied step in this area will be far harder because new reinforced Japanese bases dot the northern Solomons and surrounding islands.’
