RABBITS INCREASING

REMEDIAL STEPS URGED.

POSITION IN WAIRARAPA.

.“Rabbits are now on the increase in the Wairarapa district and farmers 1 should take steps to destroy them,” states Mr R. H. Williams, secretary of the Wairarapa Provincial Executive/ of the Farmers’ Union.

“The Department of Agriculture can supply phosphorised pollard provided farmers send in their orders and tin containers,” said Mr Williams. “Cyanide gas is also available from firms. During the past four years the Farmers’ Union has assisted groups of farmers to form rabbit associations, where farmers can employ a rabbiter among them. Three associations have been formed, one in the Taueru-Tinui district, one in the Stronvar district, and one in the Upper Plain district. After poisoning, farmers should follow up with guns and dogs. Permits to secure' .22 ammunition can be obtained from the Department of Agriculture. “Trapping the natural enemies of rabbits for their skins and the dry season have been responsible for the increase in rabbits,” said Mr Williams. “The matter of releasing manpower for laying poisoned pollard is being taken up.” Mr Williams said that in districts where rabbits were numerous the Farmers’ Union would assist in the formation of rabbit associations.
