RED CROSS SOCIETY

COUNTRY DISTRICTS SUB-CENTRE MEETING IN MASTERTON. A meeting of the country districts sub-centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society, was held in the Country Women’s Club yesterday. The president, Mrs A. C. Gawith was in the chair.

Mrs Gawith, in opening the meeting, thanked members for their co-opera-tion in the past, and asked for still larger attendances on a Wednesday, as there was so much work to be done. More spinners were urgently needed. As no white wool was available for hospital stockings for the sick and wounded, the supply must be kept up with home-spun wool. Any person wishing to learn to spin should communicate with Mrs A. L. Milne, tele- • phone 1796. The meeting approved of £4 being ' forwarded to the centre to provide for cakes for soldiers in hospital. Mrs T. R. Cunningham agreed to include in her hospital visiting on a Friday, the relatives of country members who would be inmates of the hospital for any length of time. Mrs Gawith advised the next of kin of prisoners of war. to avail themselves of the opportunity of procuring the wool now on hand. This was a special arrangement of the prisoner of war enquiry office. There was no guarantee that more wool could be set aside for this purpose after the end of March. It was decided that the annual meeting of the sub-centre- should be held on March 10, and a full attendance of members was desired. . The following donations are acknowledged with thanks: Shirts and pyjama girdles, Mrs Johnston, Tinui; pullovers, Mesdames Hewitt,- Carswell, Eton, the Misses Hathaway and Brown, and the Tinui district; hospital stockings, Mrs McCaul and Brown; fleeces, Mrs McCrea and Mr Guy Groves. Members of the Tinui district who donated jam and preserves at the time of the earthquake, may now collect their jars from the Wairarapa Centre Office, Church Street. The gifts have been much appreciated.
