MISCHIEF CHARGE
FREEZING WORKS EMPLOYEE ic FINED. FLOWERS & BULBS REMOVED FROM PARK. Norman Alexander Carswell, freezing works employee was fined £ 2 and 10s costs in the Masterton Magistrate’s Court this morning on a charge of having committed mischief in the Masterton Park. Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., presided. Senior Sergeant C.'Murphy said that Carswell had made a statement to the police that he had removed bulbs and flowers from the Masterton Park as an act of mischief, while under the influence of drink, The plants were valued at 6s. “Drink is the root of the evil,” said Mr R. R. Burridge, w.ho appeared for Carswell. He said that Carswell was a soldier released from the army for essential work. The position was that Carswell’s wife had to go out to work to pay Carswell’s fines. Mr Lawry: “He didn’t pay a fine in Napier.” Carswell was ordered to pay 6s, the cost‘of the flowers and bulbs taken.
