Mauriceville County ratepayers are reminded that Friday, February 12, is the last day on which they can pay their rates without the imposition of the ten per cent penalty. Reduced Shop Hours. In the past few months an increasing number of Wellington retail shops has adopted the practice of closing either on Saturday morning or ignoring the late night and closing at 5.30 or 6 p.m. on Friday. Inquiries made in the city yesterday show that there are two main factors governing this. The chief reason, as shown by the remarks of traders, is shortage of staff. By closing on Friday night or Saturday morning and, in some cases, closing for the lunch hour daily, it has been found possible to overcome the effect of the dwindling of man and womanpower. This applies specially to shops in which few assistants can be economically employed. The second factor, which is perhaps the basis on which reduction of hours of opening becomes possible without the trade done being affected, is the reduction | of stocks available for sale.
