( SWIMMING CLUB RESULTS AT WEEKLY SPORTS. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was an excellent attendance at the weekly swimming sports held at the Municipal Baths. The races created keen competition And some very close finishes were witnessed. The results were as follow:-- * 100 yards senior handicap: B. Desmond 1, P. Bond 2, I. Beginners’ race (boys): J. Sullivan 1, L. Mellish 2. Relay race: J. Burt, B. Hopkins, L. Hemi, L. Hurndell, 1; D. Forbes, A. Booth, H. Robinson, F. Booth, 2. FARMERS’ UNION WOMEN’S DIVISION MEETING. Mrs E. Standen presided over a fair attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Carterton branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. Members expressed pleasure at the ! success of the children’s party held on a recent afternoon in the State Theatre. The monthly competitions resulted as follows:—Best bloom: Mrs G. Couper 1 and 2, Mrs E. W. Allen 3. Best shrub: Mrs G. Couper 1 and 3, Mrs E. W. Allen 2. Personal items. On Saturday evening residents of the Dalefield district will entertain Mr and Mrs A. H. Knowles, who were recently married. The proceeds will be devoted to the purchase of soldiers’ parcels Mr and Mrs S. Jensen, of Napier,( who had spent a holiday with Mr and Mrs A. Tinsley, Kent Street, returned home yesterday. Members of the Methodist Church and friends tendered a “parcel evening’' to Miss Ruth Surtees and Mr “Arty” Kay at the Methodist Sunday School on Monday evening, in honour of their approaching marriage. Members of the Sunday school and the choir presented both with gifts. Mr Kay suitably returned thanks? News was received in Carterton yesterday of the death of Constable Edward Hamer, of Auckland, eldest son of Mr and Mrs W. Hamer, of Marton, who were well knowp in Carterton, where they had lived for several years. Some time ago he was an inmate of the Auckland Hospital and underwent a serious operation. At the time of Iris death he and Mrs Hamer were visiting his parents at Marton, where he again became ill and died yesterday. Constable Hamer, who was born in Carterton, had been a member of the police force for some eight or nine years, and was held in high esteem. He leaves a widow and six children. One son, who was a member of the R.N.Z.A.F., was killed in action over Germany about 18 months ago. The other members of the family are Misses Helen .(Carterton Exchange clerk), Gladys (Marton), Messrs Edward (Palmerston North), Charles (Wellington), Lindsay (Marton) and Pte. Leo Hamer, of the Middle East Forces.
