CARTERTON

DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL MEETING OF COMMITTEE. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr H. J. McKenzie presided over a meeting of the Carterton District High School Committee last evening. There were also present Messrs W. E. Knowles, G. Stark, F. Denbee, C. K. Goodin, G. L. Chatwin, and the headmaster, Mr W. Martin. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs P. L. Beere and R. Williams. The treasurer reported a credit balance at the bank of £5O 15s lid. The Wellington Education Board wrote forwarding a cheque for £22 13s Id, being a school grant. A letter was received from the Wellington Education Board in regard to the accommodation at the schodl recommending that further application be made to the Education Department for a grant for the purpose of erecting a new infant school in accordance with the original plan drawn up. It was stated that the Education Board ward members, in conjunction with the school committee, would go into the question of the obtaining additional land on the eastern side of the primary school' site; The resignation of Mr H. O. Peters, a member of the committee, owing to his transfer to Pahiatua, was accepted with regret. The headmaster’s report showed that there were 377 pupils on the primary roll and 43 on the secondary. The primary roll showed an increase on last year. Application is again to be made to the Wellington Education Board for a basketball area. The chairman reported that the air heaters had been received at the school and that they would soon be installed. Mr H. T. Leete reported to the committee the following examination results: Public Service Entrance, 3 candidates, 2 passes; University Entrance, 5 candidates, 3 passes. School Certificate: 7 candidates, 4 full passes and 3 partial passes. In the Public Service Entrance examination, one of the uccessful candidates was placed 194th for New Zealand out of 2000 candidates, the highest placing for the Wairarapa, while the other was a second year pupil. In the University Entrance examination, two of the successful candidates were third year pupils, while for the school certificate three were third year pupils. The following is a summary of the passes during the past five years: Public Service Entrance: 17 candidates, 15 passes; University Entrance and School Certificate, 20 candidates, 13 passes and 5 partial passes; Higher Leaving Cer-j tificates, 4 candidates, 4 certificates. The chairman paid a high tribute to the headmaster, Mr Martin, Mr H. T. Leete and Miss Overton in connection with the results obtained and on his motion a hearty vote of thanks was passed to them. The children concerned were also complimented on their success. Mr Martin thanked the committee on behalf of Mr Leete, Miss Overton and himself. Personal Items. The death took place yesterday at the Masterton Hospital after a brief illness of Mr Hubert J. Quin, a wellknown farmer of Carrington. He was well-known and highly respected and leaves a widow and a young family to mourn their loss. The funeral will leave King’s Mortuary Chapel op Wednesday after a service commencing at 1.30 p.m. for the Clareville Cemetery. The late Mr Quinn was a returned soldier of the 1914-18 war, and a member of the Carterton branch of the R.S.A. , Members are asked to attend his funeral. Mr and Mrs E. Nicolson, of Lower Hutt, are visitors to Carterton, and are guests of Mr and Mrs D. A. McPhee, of Conolly’s Line. Druids’ Lodge. Arch Druid Bro. H. J. Bassett presided over the meeting of Totara Lodge, No. 3, U.A.0.D., held last night. A vote of condolence with Bros. John and Alex Johnson in the death of their sister, Miss Beatrice Johnson, was passed. Mention was made that during her life the late Miss Johnson had always assisted in the social activities of the Lodge. Three declarations on the sick funds and two off the funds were received. A copy of the remits to be considered at the Grand Lodge meeting in March was received and considered. In all matters the delegate was given a free hand. Sick pay and accounts amounting to £lO 12s were passed for payment. REGENT THEATRE “A YANK IN THE R.A.F.” A brilliant drama, “A Yank in the R.A.F.,” will be shown tonight, with Tyrone Power and Betty Grable in the leading roles.
