MARTINBOROUGH
BOROUGH COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Martinborough Borough Council was held last night. There were present: The Mayor (Mr C. R. Holmes), Crs. A. T. Hamilton, W. H. Corfield, AV. J. Blissett, F. Gray, C. M. Ross and J. W. Mills. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. H. T. Parsons, L. J. Sievers and M. Mulvaney. The Mayor welcomed Crs. Ross and Mills to their seats. Before commencing business, the Mayor made feeling reference to the deaths of Crs. Skill and Smith, and councillors stood for a few moments as a mark of respect to their memories. The Maori Tribal Committee* wrote thanking the Council for granting the free use of the Town Hall for its patriotic effort. A circular was received from the Waikato Borough Council in regard to hospital levies. It was. resolved that while the Council sympathised with the resolution, it had no option but to collect the rate. The Rehabilitation Committee wrote suggesting the appointment ‘of a local committee to deal with the rehabilitation of returned men after the war. The matter was held over to a latei’ meeting. The Works Committee reported that a test pipe was being put down at the water headworks to supplement the well supply in winter time. It was decided that the Associated Auctioneers be written to suggestieng the need of a loading ramp at the saleyards. Owing to the untidy state of the rubbish dump, it was .decided that the gate be locked and the key kept at the Council office. The ranger reported having dealt with 11 head of stock during the month.
SWIMMING BATHS MORE MISCHIEF REPORTED. (“Times-Age” Special.) More mischief has been done at the Greytown swimming baths. Swimmers reported receiving cuts whilst in the water, and on the baths being emptied broken bottles, bricks and boulders were found on the bottom. It is only a short while since all the electrical fittings were smashed, and the committee is seriously considering closing the baths. If this course is taken it will materially affect the fine work that is being done by the Swimming Club. It is safe to say that last 50 or 60 children learn to swim at Greytown every year. The motto, “Citizens, protect your own property,” seems to be unknown to many of the rising generation. Personal. Mr and Mrs F. Best left today to spend a holiday in Auckland. TOWN HALL “DANGEROUS MOONLIGHT.” The thrilling story of the Battle of Britain is contained in the outstanding picture, “Dangerous Moonlight,” which will be shown tonight, with Anton Walbrook. and Sally Gray portraying the chief characters.
