MAURICEVILLE COUNCIL POST-WAR REHABILITATION. UNSAFE BRIDGE ON CLELAND'S . ROAD. (“Times-Age” Special.) A special meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held yesterday in the County Office, Mauriceville, for the purpose of considering the yearly balance sheet and statement of accounts, together with the report of the Audit Office thereon. Councillor E. W. Cheetham (chairman) presided. There were also present: Councillors A. Forsberg, D. Bennett, A. Gray, O. Welch and J. H. MacDonald. It was resolved that the balance sheet be adopted and the clerk was instructed to have copies of the same printed. The monthly meeting of the council was then held. The treasurer’s report, which showed a credit balance of £lBl5 4s 9d was adopted. The clerk reported that advice had been received from the building controller giving permission to issue a building permit for the reconstruction of a dwelling damaged in the recent earthquake. The clerk’s action in issuing the necessary permit was endorsed. A letter was received from the resident engineer, Public Works Department, on the subject of post-war rehabilitation, and seeking information as to the approximate number of men that could be found civil work on short notice without the necessity of any further survey work. After discussion it was left to the chairman and county clerk to discuss the matter fully with the Public Works Engineer. The clerk reported that he had made application to the building controller for permission to erect a new cottage on the council’s property at Mauriceville. A letter was received from the building controller pointing out that at the present time all materials available were required for urgent defence works and that the matter of the council’s application would be given further consideration in three mouths time. A letter was received from the Masterton County Council giving details of the heavy traffic fees received and allocated for the quarter ended November 30, 1942. The county overseer, Mr P. N. N. Jamieson, reported to the council that a bridge on Cleland’s Road was, in his opinion, unsafe owing to recent damage done by a flood, and the clerk was instructed to advise the county engineers to inspect the bridge immediately. In the meantime notices are being placed on-the bridge stating that the bridge is unsafe for traffic and anyone crossing the bridge does so art his or her own risk.
